Château de Montrichard

The castle's origins date back to the early 11th century, when Count Fulk Nerra had a wooden keep erected around 1010. The site was of importance as it lay at the intersection of two trade routes: one from Bourges to Tours and another from Paris to Spain. Around 1120, the stone, square keep was built by Hugues I d’Amboise, modeled after the fortress of Loches. This keep comprised three floors: a ground floor for storage, living quarters on the middle floor, and an attic with a wall walk. The complex was expanded with fortress walls, round towers, a drawbridge, and residential buildings.
