Château de Murol

The remains of the Castle can be visited

The Château de Murol, a medieval castle complex, stands on a basalt hill in the Auvergne. This hilltop castle has been protected as a Monument historique since 1889.

History+

The castle's origins date back to the 12th century, when a first fortification was erected on a strategically important promontory crossing three roads. In the 14th century, the complex underwent expansion and reinforcement under Guillaume Sam, including the construction of a tower and a second chapel. Through the marriage of Jeanne de Murol to Gaspard d’Estaing, the castle came into the possession of the d'Estaing family in the 15th century. François d’Estaing modernized the fortress in the 16th century with cannons and had additional Renaissance-style buildings constructed on the east side. Murol survived the Wars of Religion unscathed.
