Château de Parentignat

The origins of the estate date back to the 11th century, when a fortress of the Lords of Lastic was built on this site. In the late 16th century, it was a fortified complex with four corner towers. In 1707, Jean-Antoine and François II. de Lastic acquired the neglected estate. François II initiated a comprehensive transformation: Between 1710 and 1714, he systematically bought up the surrounding village to create space for the new castle. The medieval castle was integrated into the left wing, and the central main building with its distinctive triangular gable was constructed. After his death in 1749, the expansion continued under his son Anne-François III, even though he rarely resided at the castle. Anne-François IV. de Lastic returned to Parentignat in 1779 to complete the estate. He redesigned the interiors in the Neoclassical style, finished the park-facing facade, and fundamentally restructured the gardens. During the French Revolution, the castle temporarily served as a saltpeter factory, which protected it from looting. In the 19th century, Octavie de Lastic and her husband Joseph transformed the French gardens into an English landscape park. In the 20th century, Georges and Françoise de Lastic extensively restored the complex, which reopened to visitors in 1994.

Château de Parentignat is located in the commune of Parentignat in the Allier department, in the Auvergne region of France. It stands at an elevation of approximately 372 meters above sea level.

Château de Parentignat is currently privately owned by the de Lastic family. It is accessible to the public and can also be used for receptions. Visitors can admire the unique, intact 18th-century interior and the significant Georges de Lastic art collection.
