The Château de Peyrepertuse is a castle ruin in the Corbières region of southern France. It is considered one of the largest fortresses from the Cathar period.

History+

The origins of the lower castle complex of Peyrepertuse date back to the 11th century. In 1226, the fortress came under the control of the King of Aragon, but was recaptured by France in 1240 after three days of fighting. King Louis IX, also known as Saint Louis, expanded the complex in 1242 with the construction of the upper fortress, named San Jordi.

The castle ruin is situated at approximately 715 meters above sea level in the commune of Rouffiac-des-Corbières, in the Aude department of the Occitanie region, France.
