The medieval castle ruin Château de Pflixbourg stands above Wintzenheim in the French Upper Rhine region. This Staufer foundation from the early 13th century once served as a stronghold, overseeing access to the Munster Valley and the western foreland of Colmar.

History+

The castle was constructed between 1212 and 1219 on behalf of Emperor Frederick II as a Staufer pillar in the Upper Rhine. Its first documented mention as "Blickisberc" occurred on May 7, 1220. In 1276, Pflixbourg served as the main residence of Konrad Werner III von Hattstatt, the bailiff of Upper Alsace. The castle was repeatedly pledged, including in 1298 to the Lords of Üsenburg, in 1316 to Otto IV von Ochsenstein, and in 1330 to King John of Bohemia. In 1375, it passed to the Lords of Hus.
