Château de Posanges
In Posanges in the Côte-d’Or department in the French region of Burgundy stands the Château de Posanges, a fortified complex from the 15th century, which stands out due to its medieval construction.
History+
The origins of the Seigneury of Posanges date back to 1299, when Eudes de Frolois received it as a fief from the Burgundian Duke Robert II. A fortified house already existed then, but not on the current site. In the 15th century, Guillaume du Bois, an official under Philip the Good, acquired the scattered parts of the seigneury. From 1437, he had the current complex built, which was still unfinished at the time of his death in 1453. His son Antoine completed the castle around 1490. The du Bois family owned the complex until 1561, when Joachim du Bois was forced to sell it due to a large compensation payment. After further changes of ownership, including the Ursuline convent of Vitteaux, the castle was confiscated and auctioned during the French Revolution. In 1964, a weaving mill was built in the castle courtyard, but it was demolished again in 1980. Restoration work began in the same year.
