History+

The origins of fortifications at this site date back to the 11th century. The castle in its current form was constructed between the 12th and 15th centuries. During the Hundred Years' War, the Château de Pouancé faced multiple sieges and evolved into a fortress at the end of the 15th century during the "Mad War". The decline of the complex began in the 16th century, and from the 18th century onwards, it was completely abandoned. In the 1960s, the ruin was saved from demolition thanks to the commitment of a local resident.
