Château de Puyguilhem

To be privately owned

Near Villars in the French Dordogne department is the Château de Puyguilhem. This Renaissance château, built at the beginning of the 16th century, reflects the architectural features of the Loire châteaux from the time of Francis I.

History+

Construction of the Château de Puyguilhem began in 1513 under the patronage of Mondot de La Marthonie, the First President of the Parliament of Paris and a close confidant of Francis I and his mother Louise of Savoy. The construction took place in two phases: initially, by 1524, the foundations, part of the corner tower, and the hexagonal tower with the grand staircase were built. The remaining parts of the complex, including the residential wing, were then completed, with the structure finished in 1535.
