Château de Ramstein

Château de Ramstein was built in 1293 by Otto III von Ochsenstein, then the bailiff of Lower Alsace. Its construction likely served as a stronghold against the nearby Château de l'Ortenbourg. After the return of Ortenbourg to Albrecht von Habsburg in March 1293, which had previously fallen to Adolf von Nassau, Otto von Ochsenstein had Ortenbourg besieged and used Ramstein as a fortified base. In 1303, the complex was besieged and damaged for the first time. During the Dachstein War in 1421, a second siege by Strasbourg troops led to the castle's capture and devastation, though it was immediately rebuilt. In 1470, Peter von Hagenbach used it as a base for another siege of Ortenbourg. The castle was again affected during the German Peasants' War in 1525, before its final destruction by Swedish troops in 1633 during the Thirty Years' War.
