Château de Rapetour

Originally built in the 13th century by the Knights of Viego on a fief from Beaujeu, Rapetour was one of Theizé's three strongholds. In 1422, due to a lack of male heirs, the estate passed to Jean de Varennes. The 16th century marked a flourishing period when Pierre de Varennes added an Italian gallery, leaving numerous alchemical symbols within the structure. In the 17th century, Claude Brossette, a renowned scholar and founder of the Academy of Fine Arts and Literature of Lyon, acquired the castle, likely due to its esoteric character. The Château remained in his family until the end of the Ancien Régime. In the 19th century, it was converted into an agricultural estate and divided. Starting in the 1970s, extensive restoration began, leading to its classification as a historical monument in 1989. The Dhenain family, who acquired the property in 2008, significantly expanded the lands and initiated the creation of new gardens and the revival of viticulture, while also exploring the hidden alchemical symbolism.

The Château de Rapetour is located in the commune of Theizé - Rapetour in the Rhône department, within the Rhône-Alpes region of France. It stands at an elevation of approximately 414 meters above sea level.

The Château de Rapetour is currently privately owned. It is undergoing continuous restoration and is open for groups by appointment, as well as for individuals on Sundays, allowing visitors to explore its historic rooms and unique alchemical symbolism.
