The Château de Rastignac in La Bachellerie, Dordogne department, is an example of neoclassical architecture.

History+

The construction of the château took place between 1812 and 1817, based on designs by the architect Mathurin Salat, also known as “Blanchard.” The client was the Marquis de Rastignac, who had the building constructed from limestone. Construction was delayed by the turmoil of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars. Upon its completion, the château was decorated in the French Empire style. The château suffered destruction in 1944 when retreating SS forces set it on fire as an act of retaliation against the French Resistance.
