In the commune of Ravel in the French department of Puy-de-Dôme stands the Château de Ravel. It is an example of the combination of medieval architecture with later extensions that have preserved its Gothic core.

History+

The origins of the Château de Ravel date back to the 12th century, when Bernard de Revel began its construction in 1171. In 1283, Chatard de Ravel sold the estate to King Philip III of France. Shortly thereafter, in 1294, Philip the Fair transferred the castle to Pierre Flote, then Chancellor of France, in recognition of his services. Through inheritance, the property came into the possession of André de Chauvigny in 1431. His daughter Catherine brought it into her marriage with Charles d’Amboise in 1460. After further changes of ownership due to marriage and inheritance, the castle passed to Jean IV. d’Estaing in 1647.
