History+

The origins of Château de Rochebonne date back to 1363, when an earlier fortification was demolished during the Hundred Years' War by the Canon-Counts of Lyon to prevent it from falling into enemy hands. In the 15th century, the de Fougères family built a fortified house on this site, which served as a watchpost for the nearby Château Oingt. In 1525, ownership passed to Pierre de Châteauneuf de Rochebonne through marriage, and the estate adopted the name Rochebonne. After the destruction of Oingt, the Château gained importance. In the 17th century, under Charles de Châteauneuf, Marquis de Rochebonne, it was transformed into a prestigious pleasure castle. Later, the estate changed hands several times, including Jean-Baptiste d’Audiffret and Antoine Rique, before experiencing a decline in the 19th and 20th centuries.
