Château de Roquedols

The earliest records from 1300 confirm the existence of a farm on this site. A castle is first mentioned in writing in 1607, but a lintel from 1534 suggests an earlier construction of the current building, likely in the first half of the 16th century. In 1329, Pierre Pagès acquired the rights to the Roquedols estate. The Pagès family played an important role in local politics. King Henry IV elevated Roquedols to a barony in 1604. In 1715, the castle passed to the Dupont de Bossuges family. After the extinction of the Pagès line in 1885, the estate was sold, and the castle itself was acquired by the industrial Dols family. Later, in 1938, the 269-hectare estate was purchased by the French state and designated as a protected forest. During World War II, the castle served as a refuge for forestry services and for storing museum assets, possibly including the Mona Lisa. Since 1973, it has belonged to the Cévennes National Park, which undertook extensive renovations.

The Château de Roquedols is located in the commune of Meyrueis in the Lozère department, in the Languedoc-Roussillon region, France. It is situated at an elevation of approximately 739 meters above sea level.

Today, the Château de Roquedols is privately owned. It houses an information center for the Cévennes National Park. Despite its historical significance, the building has been closed to the public since 2006 due to safety concerns regarding outdated electrical systems.
