History+
Construction of Château de Salm began in 1205 under Count Henry III of Salm, who erected it on the territory of the Senones Abbey. Completion of the complex extended until approximately 1400. The Salm family shaped the castle's history. In 1259, military conflicts arose with the Bishop of Metz, who occupied the castle and forced Henry IV to sell it, but the count later managed to reclaim the fortress. During the 14th and 15th centuries, the surrounding area developed into an industrial hub with foundries and potteries. Around 1400, the castle's defenses were reinforced, including a shield tower and a barbican. The castle appears to have fallen into ruin around 1500, as it is already mentioned as a ruin in 1564. In 1779, Prince Constantin Alexander of Salm-Salm visited the ruins.
