History+

First written mentions of Sarzay date back to around 1300, when it belonged to the Archbishopric of Bourges. The Barbançois family, who held the seigneury, likely erected the fortified building in the first half of the 15th century. The castle played a role during the Hundred Years' War. The Barbançois remained in possession of the fief until 1720, which was elevated to a marquisate in 1651. George Sand described the castle in her 1845 novel “Le Meunier d’Angibault” under the name “Château de Blanchemont.”
