Château de Sceaux

The estate's origins date back to the 15th century, when a manor house existed in Sceaux. In 1670, Jean-Baptiste Colbert, minister under Louis XIV, acquired the estate and expanded the existing castle from 1597. Artists such as Charles Lebrun, François Girardon, and Jean-Baptiste Tuby contributed to its lavish decoration. After Colbert's death in 1683, his eldest son inherited the property and further developed it, including the construction of the orangery by Jules Hardouin-Mansart. In 1700, the estate passed to the Duke of Maine. During the French Revolution, the property was confiscated in 1793, and the original castle was demolished in 1803. Between 1856 and 1862, a new castle in the Louis XIII style was erected on the same site. After World War I, the private estate could no longer be maintained and was sold in 1923 to the Conseil général of the Département de la Seine, which restored the park. Since 1971, the park has been owned by the Département Hauts-de-Seine.

The Château de Sceaux is located in Paris, in the Paris department of the Île-de-France region, France, at an elevation of approx. 87 m above sea level.

Visitors can tour the castle. The extensive park is also used for concert events. The Pavillon de l’Aurore, with its ceiling painting by Charles Lebrun, is one of the few surviving elements of the original Baroque complex.
