Château de Schoenfels

The origins of the castle date back to 1292, when Friedrich von Schonevels initiated its construction. Over the centuries, ownership changed frequently, often through marriage, thus passing to the Ansembourg and Sanem families. In the 16th century, Henri Schlöder von Lachen acquired the estate and became lord of Schoenfels and Busbach. The castle suffered its first destruction in 1683 by French troops but was subsequently rebuilt. Only a few years later, in 1690, it fell victim to a fire resulting from a conflict between Theodor von Neunheuser and the lord of Brandenbourg. In 1759, Pierre-François de Gaillot de Genouillac married into the family. His son, François-Romain de Gaillot, sold the castle in 1813 to Jean-Baptiste Thorn-Suttor, who was then governor of the province of Luxembourg. In 1840, the Belgian senator Jacques Engler acquired the estate, which later passed to his son, Baron Auguste Goethals. After World War II, in 1948, the Luxembourgish industrialist Camille Weiss bought the castle, before it came into the possession of the Luxembourgish state in 1971.

Château de Schoenfels is situated in the village of Schoenfels, in the district of Mersch, within the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. It stands at an elevation of approximately 247 meters above sea level.

Today, Château de Schoenfels is privately owned and therefore not accessible to the public.
