Château de Sédières

The estate's origins date back to the 14th century with the construction of a medieval castle. In the 15th and 16th centuries, the structure underwent extensive Renaissance-style renovations under Jean Boutier and later his great-grandson Dominique de Sédières. Dominique de Sédières, inspired by the Italian campaigns and well-funded, initiated extensive works around 1535, which continued until 1569. Moats were filled in, old walls demolished, and buildings redesigned to emphasize light and elegance. In the 17th century, a French garden was laid out, and in the 18th century, a public chapel was built. After changing hands multiple times, Colonel Adolphe de Chanal acquired the château in 1861 and initiated extensive restorations, possibly with the involvement of Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. He had the northwest wing rebuilt and the interiors lavishly decorated. In the late 19th century, an orphanage was established on the grounds, operating until 1904. After World War I, the château fell into disrepair until it was acquired by the General Council of Corrèze in 1965 and thoroughly renovated. Since 1974, it has hosted the annual Festival de Sédières.
