Château de Sombreffe

The origins of Château de Sombreffe date back to the 13th century, when it was initially built as a simple keep under the lordship of Orbais. During this century, the complex was expanded with a separate rubble stone wall. Later, a second sandstone wall and a northern keep reinforced the defenses. In 1446, the castle passed by marriage into the possession of the Vernembourg family, who held it until 1543. Subsequently, it changed hands through the Culembourg, Lalaing, Ligne, Oignies families, eventually coming to the Lannoy family.
