Château de Sully-sur-Loire

The origins of the castle date back to the 9th century, when the Lords of Sully resided here and built a predecessor structure. A transformation began in 1395 under Guy VI. de La Trémoïlle, who acquired the property through marriage. After damage during the Wars of Religion, the castle was sold in 1602 to Maximilien de Béthune. He had the defensive structure converted into a residence and wrote his memoirs here. For over 350 years, the estate remained in the possession of the de Béthune family before it was transferred to the Loiret Department in 1962. The moated castle was already listed as a historical monument in 1928, followed by its park and moats in 1944. The site has been open to the public since 1934.

The Château de Sully-sur-Loire is located in the commune of Sully-sur-Loire in the Loiret department, in the Centre-Val de Loire region of France. It stands at an elevation of approximately 123 meters above sea level.

Today, the Château de Sully-sur-Loire is managed by the Loiret Department. The site, as a moated castle, is surrounded by wide ditches and offers insights into its various construction phases and uses.
