Château de Sully-sur-Loire
The Château de Sully-sur-Loire is an imposing moated castle on the eastern edge of the Sologne in France. It is one of the famous Loire castles and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2000, along with the entire Loire Valley. Its distinctive architecture and long history make it a significant testament to medieval construction and later representative transformations.
History+
The origins of the castle date back to the 9th century, when the Lords of Sully resided here and built a predecessor structure. A major transformation began in 1395 under Guy VI. de La Trémoïlle, who acquired the property through marriage. After damage during the Wars of Religion, the castle was sold in 1602 to Maximilien de Béthune. He had the defensive structure converted into a stately residence and wrote his famous memoirs here. For over 350 years, the estate remained in the possession of the de Béthune family before it was transferred to the Loiret Department in 1962. The moated castle was already listed as a historical monument in 1928, followed by its park and moats in 1944. The site has been open to the public since 1934.
