In Tournon-sur-Rhône in the Ardèche department, the Château de Tournon stands, which today houses a museum. Its walls tell tales of royal visits and a death that shaped French history.

History+

The origins of the complex date back to the 10th century, when a first castle was built on this site, possibly on the foundations of a Gallo-Roman watchtower. Traces of this early construction are still visible to the right of the main courtyard. The Château de Tournon served as an important stop for French kings on their travels. Louis IX stayed here on his way to the Crusades, and Francis I and Henry II also stopped in Tournon on their campaigns to Italy. A tragic event occurred in 1536, when the French heir to the throne, François de France, Duke of Brittany, died at the Château de Tournon.
