Château de Veauce

The origins of Château de Veauce stretch far back: before its construction, a Benedictine monastery stood on this site. A first fortress was probably built around 808, when Charlemagne defined the borders of the Kingdom of Aquitaine. In the 11th century, the complex was rebuilt and redesigned again in the 13th century. In the 12th century, the Château was owned by the Bourbons. In 1400, the lordship of Veauce was elevated to a barony. After the death of Charles III of Bourbon in 1527, the castle fell directly to the crown. Between 1700 and 1970, the Château passed through the hands of various noble families, including the Cadier de Veauce, who owned it until the mid-20th century. In the mid-19th century, when the castle was in poor condition, Baron Charles de Cadier de Veauce undertook extensive renovations that gave it its current appearance. In 1971, the property was sold to Éphraïm Tagori de la Tour. After his death in 1998, the Château fell into disrepair until it was acquired by Elisabeth Mincer in 2002. Since 2015, the Calligramme Foundation – now Universum – has been the owner, aiming to preserve the castle and make it accessible for cultural tourism.

The castle is perched at approximately 419 meters above sea level in the municipality of Veauce, in the Allier department, in the Auvergne region of France. To the west lies the Colettes forest, while to the south and east are the castle gardens. The village of Veauce is located to the northeast.

Château de Veauce is privately owned and is now a center for cultural tourism and nature, intended to be made accessible to visitors.
