Château de Vendrennes

The castle's origins likely date back to the 12th century, confirmed by the discovery of a Romanesque church within the fortified complex in late 1989. The Château de Vendrennes was the center of a castellany under the Viscounty of Thouars. In 1230, it was owned by the Marquise de Mauléon. During the 14th and 15th centuries, it passed into the hands of the Belleville and Clisson families and was temporarily confiscated by the French Crown during the Hundred Years' War. From the early 16th century until the French Revolution in 1789, it belonged to the Lords of Mouchamps. In the course of the Revolution, the castle was seized as national property, but its sale was delayed due to the Vendée War. The castle was set on fire in 1794, after a column under General Duquesnoy massacred about sixty people in Vendrennes in February of the same year.

The Château de Vendrennes is located in the municipality of Vendrennes in the Vendée department, a region in Pays de la Loire, France, at an elevation of approximately 85 meters above sea level.

The Château de Vendrennes remains privately owned and has been a protected Monument historique since June 12, 1991.
