History+
Originally, Villemont was a country house, its splendor evident in the interior decoration. From 1557, it was owned for several generations by the Veyny family, led by Michel de Veyny, the Treasurer of the Navy. Under his descendant Gilbert de Veyny, the castle underwent an expansion after 1740. Between 1748 and 1757, the enclosed courtyard and the west wing were built according to plans by Philibert de l’Orme. The original west tower was demolished and rebuilt a few meters west of its old location. A drawing from the Atlas de Trudaine shows the floor plan before this expansion. Construction work ended in 1757 with the drainage of the surrounding marshland. From 1865 to 1885, the castle was restored under L. J. Maisniel. A fire in 1958 transformed the complex into a ruin, but in the mid-1990s, reconstruction began through donations. On April 19, 2012, the castle and its park were classified as a Monument historique.
