The Château de Villevieille, a historic castle in the French Occitanie region, was originally built in the 11th century and remains preserved to this day. It is privately owned.

History+

The origins of the Château de Villevieille date back to 1041, when it was built by the Count of Melgueil. As early as 1053, it passed into the possession of the French king. A traditional account states that King Louis IX made the decision here to fortify Aigues-Mortes. After its destruction during the Albigensian Crusades, the building was reconstructed in the 13th century. In 1622, the castle served King Louis XIII as a base for preparing the siege of Sommières.
