Château de Wildenstein

The remains of the Castle can be visited

The Château de Wildenstein is a castle ruin in the French Upper Alsace, located in the commune of Kruth. It overlooked the road from the Oderen Pass to neighboring Lorraine.

History+

The first documented mention of the Château de Wildenstein occurred in 1312, when it was owned by Ulrich III, Count of Ferrette. He made an agreement with the Abbot of Murbach not to build castles on the latter's territory, on condition that Peter of Bollwiller was given a free hand at Wildenstein. The castle remained in Peter's family until 1536. By this time, it was largely in ruins, whereupon the Abbot of Murbach reacquired it and began rebuilding it to adapt it to the requirements of firearm warfare. A chapel, dedicated to the Holy Cross, was also built during this period.
