Château de Wineck

The remains of the Castle can be visited

The Château de Wineck, a castle ruin, is located in the French department of Haut-Rhin. It stands on a rocky plateau above the village of Katzenthal and is the only Alsatian castle situated amidst vineyards, which also explains its name: Wineck means “wine corner.” The surrounding granite terroir “Wineck-Schlossberg” is renowned for its premium Rieslings.

History+

The castle's origins date back to the 13th century, evolving from a simple residential tower. From the second half of the 13th century, it was a fief of the Diocese of Basel and changed hands multiple times, including ownership by the Counts of Pfirt, the Habsburgs, and the Barons of Rathsamhausen.
