Château de Wittschlœssel

The exact period of the Château de Wittschlœssel's construction is unknown, but the stonework suggests it was built in the 13th century. The castle was first mentioned by name in 1577 as "Wydberg Schlolsslin," at which point it was already described as abandoned. In the 18th century, the iron manufacturer de Detrich acquired the forest area, which included the castle. In 1814, it served as a military observation post for French soldiers from Bitsch under General Baron von Maureillan, and during World War II, a firefight between French and German troops took place here on June 12, 1940.
