Château Deganne

The Château Deganne is a 19th-century neo-Renaissance mansion located on the seafront in Arcachon, in the Gironde department of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region in southwestern France, overlooking the Bassin d’Arcachon.
It was built in 1853 for Adalbert Deganne (1817–1886), a civil engineer and businessman from Champagne who played a major role in the development of Arcachon as a seaside resort. Through his work on the Bordeaux–La Teste railway and land acquired via his marriage, he became a prominent local figure and later served as mayor of Arcachon (1870–1871 and 1876–1880). The château was deliberately modelled on the Château de Boursault in the Marne (built 1843–1848), linked to an unfulfilled youthful romance.
Deganne offered the property to Emperor Napoleon III during the latter’s visit to Arcachon in 1859, but the emperor declined because of the high maintenance costs. The house was used for grand receptions (including a visit by Marshal MacMahon in 1877) and housed an important collection of paintings. Deganne himself rarely lived there. After his death without heirs the building was briefly used as a girls’ boarding school before being sold and converted into a casino between 1902 and 1904 by the architects Marcel Ormières and Alphonse Peigne, who added a double-revolution staircase, a transverse gallery and a concert hall facing the sea.
Requisitioned and damaged during the Second World War, it was restored afterwards. Since the fire that destroyed the Casino Mauresque in 1977 it has been Arcachon’s only casino. Acquired by the municipality in 1989 and renovated in 1989–1991, it now houses the Casino d’Arcachon (operated by the Partouche group) together with congress and cultural facilities (Palais des Congrès / Palatium). It remains one of the emblematic landmarks of the town.
