In Montélimar, the Château des Adhémar stands as an example of Romanesque residential castle architecture in the central Rhône Valley. Built on a hill, it offers insights into medieval construction as well as modern art exhibitions.

History+

The Adhémar family commissioned this Romanesque residential castle in the late 12th century. Between 1340 and 1383, the Château was under papal ownership. From the 15th century until the early 20th century, it served as a prison. Parts of the original complex, including an 11th-century chapel and 12th-century living quarters, are still preserved.
