Local Authorities

In Montluçon, France, stands the Château des ducs de Bourbon, a castle largely built by the Dukes of Bourbon.

History+

The castle's origins date back to 1070, when Guillaume, a descendant of Archambaud IV of Bourbon, had a first fortress built on a castrum. Between 1171 and 1188, the complex was under English occupation before Philip II Augustus returned it to the Bourbons. They expanded the fortress. From 1370, in the midst of the Hundred Years' War, Louis II, Duke of Bourbon, began additions that shaped its current appearance. The structure was surrounded by a double curtain wall with four gates and forty-one watchtowers.
