Château des Rohan

The Castle can be visited

In Saverne stands the neoclassical Château des Rohan. Its park facade, crafted from red Vosges sandstone, spans 140 meters.

History+

The origins of the current castle date back to 1417, when the small Château Vieux was built. A successor building from 1670 burned down in 1779. In its place, the current Château des Rohan was constructed from 1780 to 1790 under the direction of architect Nicolas Salins de Montfort. The client was the Prince-Bishop of Strasbourg, Louis René Édouard de Rohan-Guéméné. However, at the outbreak of the French Revolution, the castle was only externally completed and lost its original purpose.
