Château du Barroux

To be privately owned

The Château du Barroux, a former medieval castle, is situated on a rocky outcrop in the commune of Le Barroux in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region of France.

History+

The castle's origins date back to the 12th century when it was built by the Lords of Les Baux. In the 16th century, it underwent transformation into a Renaissance château. During the Wars of Religion in 1563, the complex was handed over to the Protestants. After a period of decay, the Château was acquired in a ruined state by a private individual in 1929 and restored. In 1944, it was set on fire and destroyed again by German troops. A second phase of restoration has now been completed.
