The remains of the Castle can be visited

The Château du Bernstein, one of the oldest castle complexes in Alsace, is situated on a granite rock in the forests near Dambach-la-Ville in the French Grand Est region.

History+

The first documented mention of Château du Bernstein dates back to around 1009. Originally, it was owned by the Counts of Egisheim-Dagsburg. The visible structures today were built in the early 13th century. After the death of Count Adalbert II in 1211, the castle passed to the Dukes of Lorraine. Inheritance disputes led to the site being besieged and captured by the Bishop of Strasbourg in 1227. From 1236, Château du Bernstein served as the seat of an episcopal bailiwick.
