The remains of the Castle can be visited

Near Saverne in Alsace stands the Château du Haut-Barr, a striking rock castle, also known as the “Eye of Alsace” due to its strategic position and expansive views. The ruin was built directly on and between three rocks.

History+

First documented in 1123, the castle was owned by the Bishops of Strasbourg. It underwent several expansions until the 14th century before being pledged to Egenolf von Lützelburg and his allies in 1394. Nevertheless, it continued to serve as a residence for the bishops until the 17th century. A renovation and reinforcement was initiated in 1583 under Bishop Johann von Manderscheidt-Blanckenheim.
