History+
The origins of fortifications on the castle hill date back to the late Bronze Age. Construction of the current castle began in 1279 under Siegfried von Gundolsheim, then the bailiff of Colmar. In 1281, the complex passed to the Habsburgs, who undertook expansions. In the 14th century, the castle changed hands multiple times through pledges before it became a fief of the Counts of Lupfen in 1410, who continued its development. In 1563, the castle fell to Lazarus von Schwendi, who had it modernized. During the Thirty Years' War, the Château was occupied by Swedish troops in 1633 and destroyed by French forces in 1637.
