Château du Hugstein

The origins of Château du Hugstein date back to 1230, when Abbot Hugo von Rothenburg of Murbach Abbey had the castle built. It subsequently served as a residence for the Murbach abbots and to secure their possessions. In 1313, the castle chapel was consecrated. Under Abbot Bartholomäus von Andlau in the 15th century, the complex underwent restoration and reinforcement, including the construction of the gate tower. In the early 16th century, Hugstein served as a prison for Protestants and alleged witches. Its only military test occurred in 1542 during a succession dispute, which led to its partial destruction. A lightning strike in 1598 and vandalism during the Thirty Years' War further damaged the complex. In the 18th century, the castle was abandoned and later used as a quarry. From 1862, initial excavation and restoration work began, and since 2006, the Pro Hugstein initiative has been dedicated to its preservation.

The Hugstein castle ruin is located in Buhl in the Haut-Rhin department, situated in the Alsace region of France. It stands at an elevation of approximately 370 meters above sea level.
