Château du Landsberg

The first documented mention of the castle dates back to June 23, 1200, when the abbess of Niedermünster Abbey granted a plot of land to Knight Conrad von Vienhege, on which his recently built castle stood. Conrad subsequently named himself “von Landsberg”. The castle was built to secure Hohenstaufen possessions and Hohenburg Abbey. In 1232, the Landsbergs changed their feudal lord and sided with the Bishop of Strasbourg. It is presumed that the castle was expanded around 1235 by Wölfelin, the mayor of Haguenau, before possibly reverting to the Lords of Landsberg in 1237. In the 15th century, the complex was mortgaged several times but by the mid-16th century, it was fully back in the possession of the Landsbergs. However, residential use of the core castle ceased in the same century. After agricultural use, the castle served as a forester's house from the 1780s. Confiscated in 1789, it was sold in 1790 to Baron Friedrich von Türkheim, whose family still owns it today. Between 1632 and 1634, the castle was likely destroyed by Swedish troops.

The ruins of Château du Landsberg are accessible to visitors and can be explored. It has been listed as a Monument historique since October 25, 1965.
