History+

The first mention of Nideck Castle appears in seals of Burgrave Günther from 1262, a vassal of the Bishop of Strasbourg. Another document from 1264 names a Lord Burchard of Nideck. In the early 14th century, the Counts of Leiningen held shares in the castle, which by the end of the century developed into a joint heritage castle for several Strasbourg minor nobles. In 1454, Nideck was conquered by Ludwig von Lichtenberg, as it was considered a robber baron's nest. After this conquest, the castle disappears from historical records, suggesting it was abandoned in the 15th century due to its remote location. The complex consists of Upper and Lower Nideck; Upper Nideck was built around 1200, while the early Gothic lower castle with its keep was erected by the burgraves after 1260.
