Château du Rocher
The Château du Rocher in Mézangers, in the French department of Mayenne, is an edifice whose origins date back to the 13th century. It is situated on the edge of a pond and features a blend of medieval defensiveness and Renaissance elements, surrounded by French gardens.
History+
The earliest mention of the complex as "Rochier" dates to 1282. It is believed that a primitive castle already existed on this site before the 14th century, with remnants possibly hidden within the thick interior walls of the current building. In the 14th and 15th centuries, a manor house was built, still visible today in the western and northern parts. Château du Rocher played a role in 1562 when it served as a haven for the monks of Notre-Dame d'Évron Abbey, protecting their treasures and relics from a Protestant attack. In the early 16th century, the castle underwent Renaissance-style renovations under the Bouillé family, notably including the addition of an arcaded gallery. Further alterations were made in the 18th century, including new living quarters and a redesign of the entrance area. Since 1963, Château du Rocher has been classified as a historical monument.
