The Château du Spesbourg, a castle ruin in Alsace, stands on a hill near Andlau. Particularly striking are the still-preserved high outer walls of the former residential buildings, with their Gothic windows and visible openings of large fireplaces.

History+

The origins of the Château du Spesbourg date back to 1246, when Alexander von der Dick began construction on the foundations of an older complex. Completion occurred around 1250, and the first documented mention dates to 1247. Its strategic location served to protect the Abbey of Andlau, similar to the nearby Hoh-Andlau castle ruin.
