History+
The first documented mention of Altwindstein Castle occurred in 1205 in a document by King Philip, suggesting an older age for the complex. In 1332, it was subjected to a ten-week siege by the Bishop of Strasbourg, the city of Hagenau, and other allies, following accusations of brigandage against the lords of the castle. Despite a prohibition on reconstruction, the castle was rebuilt and by 1362 was a joint inheritance castle owned by several families.
