The remains of the Castle can be visited

The Château du Warthenberg, a castle ruin, is on a rocky spur in the Northern Vosges near Ernolsheim-lès-Saverne. Its location on the Daubenschlagfelsen, a sandstone massif, once made it a control point in the region.

History+

The origins of Warthenberg Castle date back to the 12th century when it was built by Count Hugo VIII of Dagsburg to monitor the Neuweiler Abbey. A first documented mention dates to 1158. The Romanesque spur castle, which apparently remained unfinished, was abandoned in the 13th century in favor of Herrenstein Castle. Its masonry later served as a quarry.
