Château du Wasigenstein
Near Obersteinbach in Alsace, the Château du Wasigenstein is a medieval rock castle. This complex, situated on a western spur of the Maimont, has a two-part structure, consisting of Gross-Wasigenstein and Klein-Wasigenstein, which share a common lower bailey.
History+
The first mention of Wasigenstein Castle dates back to the 12th century. In the 13th century, it attained the status of an Imperial Castle. In 1458, ownership transferred to the Puller von Hohenburg family, and just two years later, to the Fleckensteiners. It is presumed that the castle was abandoned during the Thirty Years' War. Its final destruction likely occurred between 1686 and 1689 by French forces.
