The Château Inférieur, a castle ruin, is situated in Peyrusse-le-Roc in the French department of Aveyron. It is an example of medieval defensive architecture in the region.

History+

The fortress was besieged as early as 761. In 1163, the castle fell to the English and was later occupied by Simon de Montfort. The town of Peyrusse-le-Roc, known in Roman times for its silver, lead, and antimony mines, gradually lost its importance from the late 16th century. The Château Inférieur was already a ruin by 1668. Today, two towers remain, with the northern watchtower described by the Ministry of Culture as the finest example in the Rouergue. Since 1995, the castle ruin has been listed as a Monument Historique.
