Château Lafite Rothschild

The origins of the Lafite name can be traced back to 1234, when Gombaud de Lafite is documented as an abbot of a monastery in the region. In the 17th century, part of the current estate belonged to Joseph de Pommiers, whose widow Jeanne de Gasq married Jacques de Ségur in 1670. Under his leadership, agricultural lands were converted into vineyards. Through the marriage of his son Alexandre to Marie-Thérèse de Clauzel, the heiress of Château Latour, an impressive portfolio of wineries was created. Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur, known as the “Prince of the Vines,” made the wine famous throughout Europe. After his death, the estate changed hands multiple times through inheritance and sales, including to Nicolas Pierre de Pichard. During the French Revolution, the estate was nationalized in 1794 and auctioned off. Following further changes in ownership, James Mayer Rothschild acquired the Château in 1868 for 4.4 million francs. The Rothschild family, who had already acquired the neighboring Château Mouton-Rothschild in 1853, guided the estate through turbulent times, including the phylloxera epidemic, two world wars, and the Great Depression. After World War II, Baron Élie de Rothschild was able to reclaim the estate and undertake extensive restorations. From 1974, his nephew Éric de Rothschild supported the management and invested in modernizations, including a circular barrel cellar designed by Ricardo Bofill.

Château Lafite Rothschild is located in Pauillac in the Gironde department, Aquitaine region, France. It is situated at an elevation of approximately 20 meters above sea level.
