Château Margaux

The estate's origins date back to the Middle Ages, with its first documented mention in the late 15th century. Between 1572 and 1582, Pierre de Lestonnac systematically acquired parcels of land, laying the foundation for the current vineyard. In 1654, the Margaux estate came under the influence of the prominent Pontac family of Bordeaux through marriage. From the early 18th century, Margaux wine gained recognition in England. Significant advancements in winemaking were made in the 18th century, including the exclusive use of red grapes for red wine. Figures such as British Prime Minister Robert Walpole and later US President Thomas Jefferson were among its admirers. The French Revolution ended the three-hundred-year family tradition; the estate was confiscated and sold in 1804. The new owner, Colonilla, had the current neoclassical château built by 1816. After a period of changing owners, Greek entrepreneur André Mentzelopoulos acquired Château Margaux in 1977. He invested heavily in modernization and reintroduced the second wine, “Pavillon Rouge,” initiating a renaissance for the estate. Following his death in 1980, his wife and daughter took over management, with Corinne Mentzelopoulos acquiring the majority shares in 2003.

Château Margaux is located in the commune of Margaux in the Gironde department, Aquitaine region, France, at an elevation of approximately 17 m above sea level.

Today, Château Margaux remains an active wine estate, continuing to produce high-quality wines. The neoclassical château building is well-preserved and serves as the operational center.
