Château Neercanne (Kasteel Agimont)

Construction of the castle began in 1698 under Baron Daniël Wolf van Dopff, then military governor of Maastricht. He used it as a country estate and guesthouse for receptions and festivities, with Tsar Peter the Great among the visitors in 1717. After van Dopff's death in 1718, Neercanne served as a residence for Prince Karel van Waldeck, commander-in-chief of the Dutch troops, in 1747. A century later, Baron de Cler acquired the property, followed by Ignatius de Thier. Thanks to de Thier's efforts, Château Neercanne remained in Dutch territory during the border demarcation between the Netherlands and Belgium in 1839. Louise Euphrasine Maria Poswick, a great-granddaughter of Baron de Thier, was the last noble resident.
