Château Prieuré-Lichine

In Cantenac in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France, Château Prieuré-Lichine is a historic castle that today houses a winery. Its wines have been classified as Quatrième Grand Cru Classé since the 1855 classification.

The origins of the winery date back to the 16th century, when Benedictine monks from the Abbey of Vertheuil established a four-hectare vineyard. During renovations in the late 1970s, 14th-century sarcophagi were discovered, indicating an earlier sister abbey of Vertheuil at this site. The monks began marketing the wine under the name Le Prieuré de Cantenac. During the French Revolution, the properties were secularized and sold.
